97 carb no cold start

My 1936 has its original 97 carb. Probably (but not definitely) rebuilt when my uncle rebuilt the engine professionally in 1981, before he parked it for 30 years then left it to me. Runs great and strong, once running. Starting, whew. If I pour gas in the carb, even cold and using the 6volt, it starts up immediately. Warm, starts immediately, no gas poured in carb required. But when cold, no amount of pumping alone will start it, at least until the battery dies and/or I worry about the strain on the starter. Even then I can smell gas. But I can't see gas squirt into the chamber when I pump it. Think it's accelerator pump? Or fuel pump? Or bad gasket somewhere? My gut tells me to rebuild the carb just because AT BEST it was last done when Carter was in office but I don't want to chase a problem and end up right back here. Thoughts?

Why are you pumping the gas? To avoid flooding the engine and washing the cylinder walls or horrors! hydraulicing the pistons step lightly on the gas to release the interlock of the choke then pull out the choke all the way and then with the ignition switch on , press the starter button. As the engine warms begin pushing the choke back in. Some hand throttle can avoid bogging as the fast idle cam meshed with the choke is dropped out. Anyway, the leather on the accelerator pump is probably dry and hard. That is really for ---accelerating.

If you can't see the gas squirt into the venturi when you pump it, either the accelerator pump isn't doing its job or you have no gas in the bowl. Sounds like priming always works so the fuel pump is good enough when the engine is running (greater than 500r pm), and since you really need the accel pump to work on acceleration, I would think the accel pump is not the problem. Since you have a 97, remove the top and see if gas is in the bowl. If not, you know cranking is not doing its job of filling the fuel bowl which could be remedied with a good new pump. Fill half the bowl with gas. Then insert the accelerator pump and manually pump it to see if gas squirts into the venturi. If not a new accel pump or a carb rebuild is in order. d

Pull the top section off the carb. and pull out the AP.and oil it up (the leather part) roll it up over itself and then roll back down before installing and oil AP bore same oil . This will make the pump hug the bore better and pump gas. Have saved many doing this. Last resort install new pump. Use the longer PUMP rod on the "W" pin, longer one is 3.805 long. Good advice from my friend Ken. Gas leaves the carb from internal leaks or "heat soak" evaporation over time. Even if you install an electric pump to prime the carb after sitting, you will still need to determine if there is an internal leak.. Overhauling the Stromberg 97 is a job for an expert. They are quite different from later models. That is the reason they were replaced in later production.
