hi make sure you check the races where the bearings ride on the axles, especially the Bottoms, this is where it has problems, and inside of the brake drum hubs where the bearings also ride, and make sure the rollers do not have bad wear spots on them my 2 cents 1937RAGTOPMAN over the years, I collected GOOD old grease cans , so I use the old time original WHEEL BEARING grease,

Be sure that the repair sleeves are properly hardened. We get them at C&G (800) 266-0470. Ask for part number B=4012, $69 each. It requires a lathe....... with a long bed and large swing and, of course, the ability to produce the results that allow pressing the sleeves in place. Also, check the rollers in the bearings. Badly spalled housings can damage them. The original Ford script bearings were almost indestructible, but many after market bearings are not properly hardened. The job is expensive, and you don't want to do it twice!

Be aware that those bearing races built into the rear axle housings appear to be the Achilles heel of our Ford cars. Yes there are sleeves to repair them but the job entails removal of the axle housings and turning them on a lathe to provide space for the sleeves.

Inspect the bottom side of the axle housing for wear. The Ford roller bearings last a long time and if yours are bad the housings are probably worn as they are used for the inner race. There are sleeves to repair the housing. the best ones are from Columbia 2-speed parts. http://www.columbiatwospeedparts.com/ Worn housings can lead to broken axles and destruction of the bearings. Previous advice on long fiber StaLube is good. The long fiber is continuously pulled through the bearing, as opposed to being slung away, leaving the bearing dry. Tricks? Just hand pack, don't ever try using the zerk on the backside. This zerk was discontinued right around your time period, so you might not have one anyway. The reason it was discontinued was excess grease found its way to the brake shoes from use of that zerk fitting.

Check with Napa Auto Parts. It should be Sta-Lube long fiber grease. The part number should be 3131.

I have a 1940 Ford rear end that needs it's rear hub bearings replaced. I have heard that there is a special grease that is recommended for this application. If you could tell me the kind of grease it is, and where it's available. Is there any trick I should know about packing these bearings? Thanks
