You can purchase SAE 90W Mineral Gear Oil API GL-1 at NAPA. It is available in 1 gallon containers under part number 65-201. I use this oil in my '53 Ford 3-speed with overdrive transmission. If your local NAPA store doesn't have it in stock, they can order it for you.

HI 36 CONV SEDAN I think GEAR OIL # 90 weight is too light, that's for Modern transmissions, it will leak out more ? I drained a few old FORD transmissions and # 90 was not drained out, it was much heavier, thicker gooier if you drain out your transmission, check with a magnet on a stick and check for particles in the drain bucket and compare that oil to # 90 I just bought 14o weight from AMAZON, comes in 1 gallon does the transmission and the rear end, you might want to check this out, my 2 cents,37RAGTOPMAN

Thanks Larry, I just opened this up to tell everyone that Tractor Supply doesn't have it either. I went on Amazon earlier but just scouted out trans oils which were all GL 4 and 5. No one seems to have 1-3 anymore. I'll look at what you've suggested and since I only drive around 500 miles a year will probably buy it.

In my 1939 Deluxe Tudor with the stock transmission, I use Sta-Lube SAE 140 API/GL-4. I do not drive in the winter. The Sta-Lube web site states that this oil is non-corrosive to brass and copper. I order it from Amazon.

Check around for a Tractor Supply store. They still have to sell the GL1 to GL3 due to the number of old tractors being used. They good news/bad news is that they only sell it in 5 quart containers...................so, when some leaks out, you will have some to refill.

Went to NAPA and Autozone so far and all they have is GL 4-5. Autozone had Penns oil GL 4 but for Chevy. Where can I buy the GL 3-4 for our transmissions? Thanks

The gear oil weight 90 should work. The important thing to remember is that you want the oil to have a low GL number. GL-1 to GL-3 should work. Why a low GL number --- your synco is made of brass and any GL number 4 and about will eat the brass. Also-- try the Search option on the V-8 Forum --- upper right side, blue box. Enter Key Word - gear oil, In the past- from pull down menu ALL, then click Search (you do not need to fill in any other field) Lots to read up on the subject.....................
