Thanks to all who commented. I didn't answer his last query and I haven't heard from him in several days so I think it was a scam.

I've sold several cars, trucks and motorcycles online and generally had good luck but I'm very specific on methods of payment. I did have a shipping agent show up at my house to pick up a vintage bike prior to receiving payment. The driver was mad as h*ll but made no attempt to take the bike. Felt sorry for him, a lot of wasted time and gas'

This is a total scam. The next step is he will tell you he's sending a truck to pick up the car and the truck driver will give you the check. It will be a phony cashier's check. Don't waste your time on this guy. For some reason we get scammers on this site. I've received several e-mails from different scammers when I used the wanted section. If a deal doesn't feel right trust your intuition.

So you are at the buyer's bank and you still don't trust a cashier's check from the bank? Even when you see with your own eyes as it comes directly from a real cashier in a real bank? I'd be more afraid of walking out of the bank with a big wad of cash in my pocket, afraid of getting robbed. Maybe robbed by the guy I just met an hour ago (or one of his friends), who now knows I have a big wad of cash, and knows where I live.

I don't even trust certified funds any more. We go to his bank and do the deal in cash counted and verified by the bank. They can even notarize the bill of sale and title if needed. I have been burned on cashiers and certified checks as well. Cash is king and let the bank handle it so you don't get counterfeit money.

So at a minimum, it's going to cost you $100 (one half of the appraisal) to sell your own car? NO, it's your car and the asking price is what you want, period! Stop haggling with this scammer!

Is Model on the register for the club? You have a beautiful car, you know what it's worth. It's the buyers job to figure out what it's worth to them. If they want an appraisal that is fine. It's also on their dime. I agree with the other two responses, be careful. I sold a knucklehead bobber (1946) a few years ago and when the buyer asked me what I wanted for it I said $30,000.00. He said he would think about it, I could think about it and we could negotiate a price. I said, "Sir, I don't want to be rude, but that price is non-negotiable. Why don't you get on e-bay and check the prices on knuckleheads?". He called three days later and said he would take it. He came to my place with a cashier's check, we went to my bank and verified the funds and deposited them in my account and he ended up with a beautiful motorcycle that's worth more now. I personally don't use paypal or any third party to buy vehicles. In the bike world it's cash, or personal verification of funds. If he would have wanted to take a test drive I would have said fine, leave $30,000.00 here and you can take a test drive (understand I couldn't go with him).

So presumably you'd have to pay half the appraisal fee, whether he buys the cab or not? Sounds fishy to me, especially if the appraisal fee is to be paid up front. Like "roadster36" says, you've already made your own appraisal, and he can accept or reject it. JMTCW.

It sounds suspicious to me. Why should you "split" the appraisal fee ? You know what it is worth. You set your price, he can either accept it or walk. If he decides to accept he pays you in cash or transfers $$ into your account. When your bank says the funds are trsnsferred then he can pick the car up. It sounds like a scam to me.
