Disconnect the input fuel line and hold your thumb over the inlet while cranking the engine. If you thumb is sucked into the fuel pump, you have a air leak in the fuel line from the tank, or you fuel line is plugged. Air leaks are usually caused the flex line going bad. A temporary fix for a clogged line is to disconnect the line at the tank and blow air through it from the engine side. The permanent fix is to clean the tank and replace the fuel line with a new copper coated steel line. If you don't have suction, check the sediment bowl gasket. It must be in good condition and fit inside the cover properly. If that is OK, remove the pump from the car and check the operating arm for slop. The push rod only moves the operating arm about 1/4 inch, so the arm should If there is slop, you will have to replace the operating arm and it's pivot. If there is no slop, loosen the screws that hold the diaphragm and then tighten them until the head of the screw just touches the lock washer. Operate the pump several times and then with the diaphragm relaxed, tighten the screws in a cross pattern. If you still don't have suction, the valves are installed incorrectly or are defective.

Did you replace the 2 valves in correctly , Possibly poor seal between the diaphragm and the upper washer and the lower one Its impossible to see what you did in there ?? I have a 41 rebuilt one on the EV8CA web site. ken ct 1-203-260-9780 cell.
