I bought a replacement fuel pump for my 1948 V8 at NAPA. Before installing, I pushed on the arm to manually test the action, and the cup that rides on the fuel pump rod broke off cleanly. Comparing it to the original, the cup is not nearly as substantial. A fuel pump from at least one other reputable aftermarket Ford vendor appears to be the same as the NAPA pump. Do I really need the cup on the end of the arm? At least one post at this site suggests the cup is not necessary. I would rather go without the cup than get another one and take the risk that it would break while operating, and cause damage inside the engine. Thanks Jim

The cup is absolutely necessary, and I can't think of why anyone would suggest otherwise. Napa stands by the products they sell, just exchange it for a good one and treat it right: Seat the cup on the rod correctly, compress slightly as you install the mounting bolts.

What results when the cup breaks while in operation, and it detaches from the pump arm?

ford38v8 gives you good advice - suggest you go with it and not become overly concerned. When properly mounted and in operation as designed you in all likelihood will never experience the failure you described. As an additional installation suggestion, bump the motor over until the rod is in its lowest position and lubricate the cup and end of the rod with an appropriate grease, place the pump cup on the top of the rod (ensure it is located correctly) and while pressing the pump down with one hand until the bottom flange is flush with its mating surface, install and finger tighten the nuts on the lock washers then alternately snug both down with your wrench. Don't over-tighten and possibly warp the flange (should not be an issue, just a routine precaution).

I can send you a replacement one for the postage, need to know if its a 8BA type engine or an older version. The cup is a different size. Late is bigger an early is smaller. ken Isidor ct.
