Bubba on fordbarn.com has several web pages on their rebuilding of Ford distributors. http://www.bubbasignition.com/

First you need to decide what you want in a distributor, reliability, ease of service, good mileage, performance and availability of parts and rank them in importance. If you intend driving a car with a stock engine and want reliability and good availability of parts, the stock distributor is the best option. If you are building a race engine, then you will have to take into consideration the cam shaft, cubic inches and type of fuel delivery to find the distributor that will fit your needs. As I have said before, the stock set up is the easiest to trouble shoot as you are then working with some thing that has worked for years on hundreds of thousands of cars and truck. When you do your own engineering or buy someone elses engineering, other people will have a difficult time helping you, because you have introduced several unknowns into the service equation.
