Hi again. My rear end overhaul continues; Well I managed to get the pinion bearing pre load as near to perfect as perfect can be so I've advanced along to setting up the back lash and carrier bearing preload. Please note that I'm fully versed in repairing differentials having done many Mack, Rockwell and Eaton in my past life, understanding pinion depth, tooth contact, preloads etc, but this is my first Ford Banjo. I've been following Vern's little book and, with the pinion installed have been trying to set the carrier preload and back lash but going nowhere fast. So, as it appears there's no pinion depth to contend with on these diffs, what I've decided to do is remove the pinion from the banjo, then put say .015" shim stack between the RH housing and the banjo. With that standing verticle, place the carrier and axle assy in place. Then put the LH bell over the axle and snug it down gently to the banjo and measure the gap with feeler gauges. Remove the LH housing and put a shim stack with say .005" more than the measured gap and from there set the carrier preload. Once I have the preload set, take it all apart, re install the pinion into the banjo, install the housings with the preload shim stacks and then swap the shims from side to side until I get the desired .008" backlash at the pinion. Then close it up and hope for the best. What do you think ? Any and all opinions appreciated. Thanks Greg
