Supereal has it right. Bolts are not a good substitute for studs in block that were designed for studs. It doesn't make any difference if they are grade 5 or grade 10. Higher grade bolts may not stretch enough to keep a good seal.

I have Caterpillar bolts in my flathead with finned heads. They say they are a grade 10. They work great. Part # 1D-4566. Try these. I also run them on another flathead as well.

Using bolts instead of the correct studs is not a good idea, with some entering the water jacket. There are three lengths of studs required to compensate for the indicated locations. Old cast Iron is usually soft, and may not support correct bolt tension. We buy them at C&G for about $1.50/stud. With new nuts and washers, it comes to about a hundred bucks in all, not excessive for a good engine build.

I am rebuilding a 24 stud flathead can I use grade 8 bolts and not studs, stud kits are expensive
