I totally agree with TomO. Also, typically you'd fill the radiator until the fluid is just above the top of the core.

I would go with the 7 lb pressure cap. The 16 lb is too much pressure and is not needed for your car. The higher pressure caps are needed to raise the boiling point of the coolant in systems that operate around 200 F.

Your coolant is seeking it's own level. Once it "burps" the excess leave it alone and drive it.

It's a new copper correct looking replacement from Classic Ford Radiator, with a standard depth filler neck, not the 1" deep OE style. When cold, I have been putting coolant in until it is close to the bottom of the fill neck- is that too much? Does it need most of the upper tank for expansion? Thanks!

seems like the engine is just getting to its operating level, try removing the cap, letting the car come to temp and look to see what the level is. maybe just not giving the water any room for expansion

I have a 16 lb cap on my 53 Sunliner V8. When the engine reaches operating temp, a fairly large amt of coolant comes out of the overflow. When cool, the tank appears low, and I add coolant. Engine temp is mid 170's at max. Is this the correct cap? Thanks!
