banjo rear end

I"m scared,noticed my rear end on 48 ford 2dr sedan is leaking,right where the passenger axle housing meets the rear -end.I"m what you call a driveway mechanic,I literally do my work in the driveway.I"ve been putting this job off for some time.Am I correct that rear-end must come out,and if I don"t have spring spreader what could i do.With these cars you can"t take to garage and say fix-it, you must do work yourself,right.

John, In general you are right but there are still a few shops that know how to work on the old cars. Why don't you add your general location to the post (and to your profile) and someone might suggest a shop that could handle it. Charlie Stephens

The most important thing to remember is that the paper shims (gaskets) between the center housing and tubes are shims for adjusting the rear end gears. Assuming the wear pattern is good they need to be replaced with shims (gaskets) of the same thickness. Good luck, have fun. Charlie Stephens

The last time the rear end in my '41 leaked I found that the bolts holding the axle housing to the banjo had loosened. You might try tightening them (gently) before you tear it all apart.

I agree with deluxe40. You could also drain the oil and remove each bolt and add some sealer to the base of the threads and reinstall. spray some cleaner into each threaded hole before reinserting the bolts. Don't over tighten.

I would check the bolts, and separate the housing just a bit to insert some sealer all the way around and clean all the bolt holes and seal them. I think guys are on the right track for you

All the advice is good stuff. If you want a "manual", go to; verntardel.com and they have a 32-48 banjo rebuild 52 page guide book #10 for US$11.95. Also, vanpeltsales.com has tech info and parts drawings on their site. Check your EFV8 club roster for members in your area that have an 89A-(model number) listed, and they may be able to help.

will try bolt tighting route first,also if gaskets act as shims,can you use sealer??
