Dove-tailing with carcrazy's excellent advice, if your hubcaps are highly polished/pristine-like in condition, fold a clean microfiber cloth a couple of times and place that on the edge of the hubcap before striking with a rubber mallet to further protect the finish.

If the hubcaps are used, rotate the hubcap around on the wheel until you find the sweet spot where the hubcap was previously installed - this will be the spot where the bumps on the wheel line up with the depressions (slight dents) on the inside lip of the hubcap. Once you have found this location, you can either use the palm of your hand or a rubber mallet to install the cap. Only strike the hubcap near the edge of the cap, never near the center.

I have problems when trying to put the 1940 Ford hubcaps on. I have tried the heal of my hand and that hurts my hand is too soft. I have tried to use a rubber mallet and I end up denting the dome. I am not going to buy new caps until I figure how to install them without damaging them. Thanks, Bob
