Hadn't really seen the grille on the stake truck in previous post in years, and when we picked it up out of the second garage I was surprised to see that it was completely finished in chrome. All the other trucks I've seen have the shoulder/collar of the grille painted body color with chrome accents on the horizontal grille members. My brother had a picture of the truck painted silver with black fenders and trim. This looks just like the "thrifty demonstrator" I have seen in several ford books (Mack Hils Ford pickups book p.60-61 for example). Is it possible this might have been a dealer demo at some point? OR just finished like one? My grandfather grew up in Tennessee and would never have spent the money on this just to 'purdy' it up. I've also sent some of my questions on this truck into John Griscom, but would be interested in any other ideas you folks might have. Here's a pic of Nolan Cason's identical 37 stake, illustrating the "standard" (deluxe) grille.

Anything to sell a vehicle. Rememeber that. With the deluxe pickup package there was a chrome grille. Now the package included dual horns, dual wipers, twin spare tires (one on each side), and possibly the sliding rear window. Now..whether your vehicle was once a demonstrator --- we will probably never know, unless you have pictures that go back to the day it was purchased. Back to my original statement -- if a dealer saw that someone was interested in a vehicle and all it took to make the sale was to add the chrome grille-- you can pretty much expect that when the truck was picked up, it had a chrome grille. Now, if your vehicle has most of the items I mentioned above, then your vehicle probably started its life as a deluxe 1937 pickup. Hope this helps -- I might have left off one or two items from the deluxe package, but you get the idea.

nelsb01, thanks for your comments. The truck is a flatbed stake, so no dual spares, and no fog lights, but it does have dual horns and wipers and the chrome or stainless windshield trim. Also, it has the 3 digit odometer and not the 4 digit odometer. Just looked in the 1937 book, and I see the chrome grille was a deluxe option, as you noted. I saw that the rear sliding window was an option, but it doesn't have it now, so I'll leave it like it is.
