Trying to get an old '49 (with which I have zero experience) back on the road. Trying to get the rear end and brakes in shape. Two questions; a) how do you get the rear axles out? I have looked for snap rings and other retaining devices with no luck and b) any suggestions regarding best places to get brake parts. Hubs and backing plates are in good shape. Thanks for any help.

In looking at the F-1 parts manual it appears that the axles come out by removing the four bolts from the axle bearing/backing plate retainer. I see no parts in the diagram that indicate there are any other type of retainers or keepers. I suspect those axles have been in there for a long time. You may have to spray rust removers such as Liquid Wrench or Zepp 45 around the edge of the bearing to get them to come out. I would think you may have to use a large hammer(common Ford tool) to hit the axle flange to get the axles to move out.Hopefully someone on the forum who has personal experience will be able to give more info on this.

Tom has given you the basics. Using the hole in the axle flange, remove the bolts holding the bearing retainer flange. Almost always, the the axle bearing is stuck fast to the housing. The proper tool to get the axle out is a "slide hammer" that bolts to the flange. Pulling the axle straight out is necessary to prevent damage to the oil seal in the housing, so be careful if you are trying to force it out. Check the bearings for any roughness. If replacement is due, the bearings will have to be pressed off and on with an arbor press. Most machine shops can do it.
