Can I change just the axles and housings from a 39' Ford to the center section of a 42' Ford? Thanks for any help

It can be done, but you'd also need the spring, tube shock mounts, a shorter sway bar, wheel spacers, modified radius rods, and a host of other considerations like hand brake cable. Best to do right with the correct and plentiful '42 - '48 axles. Alan PS - I just now discovered that you are working with a pickup. My advice given was for a car.
