1949-51 engines were painted a medium green and the 52-53 engines were painted a light green. Bill Hirsch has the correct colors http://www.hirschauto.com/

Janman, The link below shows the only reliable method of determining if your crank is a 4" Mercury: http://www.goldengatev8.org/docs/merccrankid.pdf

alan, thank you, and I do get it now, but, in other words, there is no way to look at the exterior of a flathead('49-53') and tell by color, casting number, etc. what engine it is.(i.e.,ford or mercury) Is this correct? I have seen mercs with orange colored engines at some street rod shows, is this just a preferance thing?? thanks again guys, you all have a great club here. Thanks for putting up with my dumb questions. clem

Clem, The only dumb question is the question that doesn't get asked. We're here to answer what we can and ignore what we can't. Casting numbers may be the same on both Ford & Merc blocks, it's how they are machined and fitted out that makes them what they are. There may be an identifying mark somewhere, but I don't know of one. And about the orange engines, any engine can be as orange as you want. Just give me a spray can...
