Will any other wiper arm work on a 40 Merc other than 40 Merc arms? I don't have any. These are right & left.

I believe the '40 Ford arms will work.

The 40 ford arms will work, but they are shorter than the Mercury arms and would leave much of the windshield full of rain. Long ago, I had a pair made by Ficken Wiper Service ( https://rebuildingtricowipers.com/ ). He may still have some NOS arms that he could bend for you. The 41-48 pickup arm may be closer to the correct size. If you are not interested in putting your car on the Concourse for point judging, you could try to find a retrofit kit to use the 41-48 arms. Another way to do this is to buy both the 1940 and the 1941 arms. Drill out the rivets that hold the parts together and mount the long part of the 41 arm on the short part of the 40 arm. If you decide to take this path, look for some used 41 arms. They are made of stainless steel and should be able to shine.
