Hey All Any one have figured out how to safely remove, clean up and refinish a 2 tone 1940 Merc steering wheel and horn button? I have read about using a couple different tools but I’m concerned about damaging this 80 year old part, Thanks& happy holidays! Merc5340

To remove the horn button, disconnect the battery, push down on the button and turn counter clockwise. To remove the wheel, use a steering wheel puller. There are 2 threaded holes for the puller in the wheel. If all of the cracks are filled in the steering wheel, use the same paint as you have for the dash, but add a flex additive to the paint. The plastic moves more then the metal. I would not try to refinish the horn button. The engraving is too shallow and will disappear when you try to paint it.

Thank you Tom O! My car has a locking steering wheel, and I am having considerable difficulty with removing the locking mechanism. I think it is supposed to unscrew-not sure. The rest of your description matches mine. I will try to post a picture of the center of my wheel showing the threaded device-it has 3 fingers and a threaded center hole.

I have my car in storage right now, so I can't check the steering wheel. I think that the 3 finger part is part of the steering wheel. The locking mechanism is under the steering wheel at the top of the column. it consists of a spring loaded pin in the column and a hole for the pin in the steering wheel. When the lock is turned to the unlockposition the pin is retracted to allow the wheel to turn. To remove the wheel: put the nut back on the column finger tight then back off 2 turn to protect the threads. Install the steering wheel puller by installing bolts in through the slots in the puller, into the 2 threaded holes. tighten the center bolt of the puller to seat it on the steering wheel nut and then continue tightening until the wheel pops loose from the taper. remove the puller remove the nut\pull the steering wheel off of the column.
