Early Ford V-8 Club Forum

FORUM RULES: Users agree to these Rules when using Forum.

  7. VIEWING MULTIPLE TOPICS ON SCREEN: You can choose to see more than 10 Topics at a time ... Log In and choose "Preferences" from the top bar on the Forum page. Scroll down and Change the "Default Topics Returned" parameter to 25 or 50, and save the changes. Since this setting is stored in your browser 'cookies' (if enabled), it seems to use that stored value even if you are not logged in. So, if you use a PC that you haven't logged into the forum from, the setting still seem to remain at the default.
  8. EXTERNAL PHOTO LINKS ON FORUM: You can still use external photo links in your posts on the new forum. They follow the rules of any link in that they have to have the URL link qualified down to the full image file name (example: .jpg). The links will open in a new browser window, the same as an uploaded image attached to a post. Since an image attachment to any post does not display inline with the post, the results are the same. You can use multiple external links within a post. This link is from photos on a site from Don Clink's 'Deuce@75' albums:

    Using links from photo sites such as Photobucket can help in "size" issue with uploaded attachment files. For best viewing in web browsers, photos should be around the 800x600 pixel range, and probably not more than 1024x768. Most cameras today store HUGE jpg image files, as the default settings are in the 7, 8, 10, and 12Mb image sizes. The image files that are then attached are very large, and the browser can't display the full image size without using the scroll bars. Use the re-sizing functions of your photo editing software to reduce the image to 800x600, which reduces the file sixe and the image load time in the browser. Don uses Google's free Picassa3 software, which is an excellent photo management product. All of the photo albums of the Deuce, Grand National, and Auburn that are links on the NORG site were built using Picassa's web creation functions. And it's free? (THANKS to Don Clink for the info!)
  9. HOW DO I SHOW MY EMAIL ADDRESS ALONG WITH MY USERNAME? You can LogIn on the Forum, and select PREFERENCES. On this page Members can add optional information such as their City,State, Country; Occupation; Hobbies: list a Homepage; list AOL Instant Messanger Handle; Signature; "Make Email Address viewable to others;" and even change the number of Default Topics shown on a page. WHEN others click on your profile, they will see this information.

HAS ANYONE USED A CHAMPION ALUMINUM RADIATOR IN A 1941 MERCURY.

The Original Mercury Radiator has the Cast Iron lower outlet tubes, which form a rectangular connection to the bottom sh*ll of the radiator. The connection is 2 3/8" wide outer dimension. The Cast Iron lower Hose tubes are 8 1/4" tall and attach to rubber hoses that are on the same plane as the water pump outlets.

The Cast Iron tubes are 20 1/2" Center to Center. The connections are the same 1 3/4" exterior dimension.

The Champion Aluminum Radiator is supposedly 40% more efficient at dissipating heat.

The Aluminum Radiator outlets are 16 1/4" Center to Center. Using 1941 Ford lower radiator hoses on
the aluminum radiator , the hoses pinch on the torsion bar and they do not clear the Fan Blade.

Has anyone found a firm that modifies or fabricates a 1941 Mercury Aluminum Radiator, or knows of a way to modify what I have?

The copper core radiators transfer heat better than the aluminum radiators. If your core is plugged or otherwise bad, I would have it re-cored with a copper tube radiator with the correct number and configuration of fins and tubes. The main advantage that aluminum radiator cores have over copper cores is price, any other comparison will find the aluminum falling behind.

my vote is to have the original radiator redone
will save you hours of frustration, trying to make the aluminum radiator fit.
looks like it will be real hard to make the bottom pipes, out of aluminum pipe. and tig weld it all together
just find a good radiator shop

Thank You to Tomo, I had the original radiator recored and a I had a second radiator from a I car I bought in Wisconsin that was a field car. The Driver's side lower tube was in much better shape than my radiator, even though the rest of it was shot.

Champion Cooling Systems has a Cadcam Drawing of a 1941 Merc radiator, but have not decided to produce it yet.

Maybe if enough embers show interest they might consider it.

As original radiators get scare for rebuilding an alternate source might be good.

Not sure how many would need to be a production run.

The cost would be between 1/4 to 1/3 the Price of a recore.

This certainly would not be an option for High Quality Restoration.

The 41 Mercury radiator is a one year radiator that was used only on the Mercury. See photos posted by the OP.

I don't know how many radiators would be the minimum for making a reproduction, but there are fewer 41 Mercurys being restored than any other year Mercury. If you think that there might be enough interest, contact Champion to see what kind of commitment they would need to start production on the radiator. Then go though your roster and send a letter or E-mail to all of the 41 Mercury owners that you can find. Ask them if they would commit to buying an aluminum radiator from Champion. Once you have this information, you can contact Champion to see if they are willing to go into production using the commitments that you have.

Attached is a better description of how a 41 Merc radiator is different than a Ford radiator

The Mercury Radiator has Cast Iron Tubes which are brazed to the Lower Tank. The ports on the lower tank
are 2" wide and 15/16" tall. The rectangles are 16 1/2" Center to Center. The Cast Iron Tubes brazed to the bottom tank provide an 8 1/2" rise so the outlet tubes are Parallell to the water pump inlets. The 41 Merc lower tubes also provide a 20 Inch Center to Center Separation . This allows the Merc hoses to clear the Torsion Bar and not touch the fan blade.

A Gates Hose Part Number 21284 has a 1 3/4" inside diameter which has a section that can be cut out to Profile a
1941 Merc lower Radiator Hose. I purchsed that from CAR QUEST Several years ago . Car Quest was purchased by
Advance Auto Parts.

I bought replacements today, 7/17/2021 from AUTO ZONE (special ordered) which cross to the Gates Hose.
It is a DAYCO Hose Part Number e711461231 L I had two 50 year oldd hoses to use for patterns.
One was a Bowes Seal Fast Part Number BH-51, the Other was a Gates Vulco Part Number CH-84.
The Gates Vulco Hose was 3/16" longer than the Bowes Seal Fast Hose.

Regarding New Hoses
The Car Quest Hose seemed more pliable than the Auto Zone Hose. The lower hoses are a tight fit.

One of the attached pictures shows the hose profile set up for cutting by white Duck Tape.
