My wife and I are looking for our first classic car. We are eyeing a 53 Monterey 4 door. It looks and shows well. Gateway Classic Cars in Detroit has it. I'm plan on converting to 12 volt and adding a/c. That should be no problem. Here's what I'm concerned with and need some advice; when you open the hood, it wobbles back and forth and opens unevenly. Could the springs be shot or do I need to replace the hinges? I know it would be a guess not seeing it in person, just would like to hear your experience with these. Thanks

You will have to do a little troubleshooting to determine the cause of the problem. Most likely the wear points in the hinges are worn. If it is like a '53 Ford, there are three bolts on each side of the hood that mount the hinges to the hood. These can be loosened to allow you to move the hood relative to the hinges (and front fenders) to gain better alignment with the rest of the car.

The problem could be that the hinges are binding and need lubrication or the pivots oof the hinges are worn and must be repaired. You should be able to see this by looking at the hinges carefully.
