  7. VIEWING MULTIPLE TOPICS ON SCREEN: You can choose to see more than 10 Topics at a time ... Log In and choose "Preferences" from the top bar on the Forum page. Scroll down and Change the "Default Topics Returned" parameter to 25 or 50, and save the changes. Since this setting is stored in your browser 'cookies' (if enabled), it seems to use that stored value even if you are not logged in. So, if you use a PC that you haven't logged into the forum from, the setting still seem to remain at the default.
  8. EXTERNAL PHOTO LINKS ON FORUM: You can still use external photo links in your posts on the new forum. They follow the rules of any link in that they have to have the URL link qualified down to the full image file name (example: .jpg). The links will open in a new browser window, the same as an uploaded image attached to a post. Since an image attachment to any post does not display inline with the post, the results are the same. You can use multiple external links within a post. This link is from photos on a site from Don Clink's 'Deuce@75' albums:

Using links from photo sites such as Photobucket can help in "size" issue with uploaded attachment files. For best viewing in web browsers, photos should be around the 800x600 pixel range, and probably not more than 1024x768. Most cameras today store HUGE jpg image files, as the default settings are in the 7, 8, 10, and 12Mb image sizes. The image files that are then attached are very large, and the browser can't display the full image size without using the scroll bars. Use the re-sizing functions of your photo editing software to reduce the image to 800x600, which reduces the file sixe and the image load time in the browser. Don uses Google's free Picassa3 software, which is an excellent photo management product. All of the photo albums of the Deuce, Grand National, and Auburn that are links on the NORG site were built using Picassa's web creation functions. And it's free? (THANKS to Don Clink for the info!)
  9. HOW DO I SHOW MY EMAIL ADDRESS ALONG WITH MY USERNAME? You can LogIn on the Forum, and select PREFERENCES. On this page Members can add optional information such as their City,State, Country; Occupation; Hobbies: list a Homepage; list AOL Instant Messanger Handle; Signature; "Make Email Address viewable to others;" and even change the number of Default Topics shown on a page. Has anyone ever successfully replaced a broken mirror lens from a cowl swan neck mirror? I have one that needs to be re-chromed and have a new lens put in it.

I have not been able to find a "new" one so I'm looking into whether it's possible to fix the broken one that I do have. The car is a 1941 Mercury so nothing before and nothing after 1941 models is correct for the car, but at least it's the same as a 1941 Ford mirror.

Take it to a glass shop, they will be able to replace the mirror face for you.

Is the 41 cowl mirror 2 pieces like the 1940 mirror? I damaged the cowl mirror on my 40 Mercury and just exchanged the base with a Ford mirror. Because of the rolled edge, most glass shops cannot replace the mirror glass. There are some advertisers in Hemmings that re-silver mirrors, they may be able to unroll the edge and re-roll it on a new piece of mirror.

If they offer to spin a new head on the mirror, ask for a current photo of the new head. Some of the new heads that are supplied are not shaped at all like the original.

Thank you guys. Those are some good leads.

It is a one-piece mirror so I can't exchange the 4-inch diameter face/lens with a good one. The rim definitely needs to be unrolled to replace the lens and re-rolled over the new lens.

I've thought about trying to pry it out myself with a screwdriver but I don't want to make the problem worse. Re-rolling the edge must require some special tools. I'll check with the automotive glass shops and the Hemmings advertisers and see if I can find someone who can do it.

I guess if it's re-chromed they could smooth out any scratches/gouges with copper before plating?

If you are going to re-chrome the head, you must do it before replacing the mirror. The plating process will damage the silver on the mirror. The original head was polished stainless steel.

The 41 Mercury outside mirror is different from the 41 Ford mirror. They have different P/Ns. I believe that the difference was the base, the photos in The V-8 Album confirm that. The base of the Mercury was manufactured to look like the Mercury cowl molding. and the Ford base looked like the Ford cowl molding. The 42 - 48 mirrors that are being reproduced do not have this detail.

Ah! I thought it was the same as the Ford. That's good to know.

Thank you TomO
