40 Ford firewall color? Is it the body color or I have a suspicion there was some black on there also? All help appreciated.

Firewall is painted body color. The only item I can think of that would be painted black would be the wire loom cover.

On a '39 and it may be true on '40, the "kidney"; wire loom cover, was painted body color. Mallast concedes that there may have been som plants that painted them black due to the "equipment that they had".

All 1940 Ford passenger cars had the cowl painted at the same time as the rest of the body. Thus, the firewall is in fact body color. Hope this helps... Mike Kubarth

Basic question...IF the loom was painted body color, then each assembly plant would have to have a supply of various colors to install over the the wiring after wiring completion. Seems for production efficiency, a black cover would "keep the line running" without shortages. A "body color" wiring loom cover suggests a potential production problem.....comments please

Craig, In my opinion you make a valid point. Personally I have yet to see a body color wire cover. That does not imply they didn't exist, simply that I have never seen one (original). This is something I will check in to further for the new book. Just as side note, it made no sense to have the bolts that hold the wiper bracket body color if the bracket was black. If the bracket was installed prior to body painting, then it only stands to reason the bracket would also be body color. I DO have factory photos that clearly depict these bolts as other than body color. Perhaps cadmium?

Each plant did in fact have a supply of paint as each plant painted the body, fenders, hood ,etc.
