My 38/39 transmission has brass synchronizer but teeth will grind when I try to down shift. The brass teeth look good so what is the fix. I do not want to have to double shift like the model A guys do.

Does the transmission have enough gear lube in it?

It's up to the fill hole so I assume it does.

The following trouble shooting information is from a Motor's Auto Repair Manual in answer to the "gears clash when shifted" question. 1. Clutch drags. 2. Synchronizer friction surfaces scored, worn, burred or gummed up. 3. Front or rear mainshaft bearing worn. 4. Synchronizer clutch gear hub loose on splined mainshaft due to wear. 5. Lubricant too thick or too cold. 6. Clutch shaft bearing worn. 7. Clutch shaft not true because transmission is not aligned with engine or crankshaft.

If it does not grind from 2-3 but it does from 3-2 the problem is most likely the syncro blockers are too worn , but also excessive end play can also be a factor. It is not the outer teeth of the blockers but the inner taper and slight rings on the interior. A rebuild sounds necessary

From 2 to 3 no problem. From 3 to 2 teeth grind. Looks like a rebuild, thanks
