Just a quicky on: how much oil does one use when cleaning and refreshing the stock oil bath cleaner. Thanks

In your photo, the level "indicator" is easily seen. On the left side of the housing, near the bottom.

That is not a stock oil bath air cleaner for 1940.

My guess is that a PO removed it.

That looks like a truck air cleaner.

Thanks for all the comments concerning this air filter. It is the one that came with the vehicle when I bought it. I had no idea as to why it's there or where it came from. Interesting comments that it isn't the original. Right now, it is serving me well as it looks as if it is at least close to being stock. Any pictures of an original would be appreciated. Wonder why this one is thought to be better than the original. Again, comments really appreciated by this novice.

The V8 Club 1940 Ford restoration book is great at answering many of your questions, plus it has many photos. Your air filter is no more efficient than the original 1940 oil bath air cleaners just different appearance. For 1940 there are 4 different air filters, a dry style, two standard oil baths from two different Mfg. and one heavy duty oil bath.
