FORUM RULES: Users agree to these Rules when using Forum.

The user agrees to the following terms:

  1. All information that you provide to us for your membership is correct.
  2. You will not use your membership to spam, harrass, or exploit other members in any way.
  3. Vulgar, Abusive, Racist and Sexist Language will not be tolerated.
  4. Commercial-type sales postings will not be allowed.
  5. No mass posting or flooding of the boards is allowed.
  6. No Advertising of parts or cars; no Ebay or business/commercial ads (please use the "Classified" for ads Wanted or For Sale).
  7. VIEWING MULTIPLE TOPICS ON SCREEN: You can choose to see more than 10 Topics at a time ... Log In and choose "Preferences" from the top bar on the Forum page. Scroll down and Change the "Default Topics Returned" parameter to 25 or 50, and save the changes. Since this setting is stored in your browser 'cookies' (if enabled), it seems to use that stored value even if you are not logged in. So, if you use a PC that you haven't logged into the forum from, the setting still seem to remain at the default.
  8. EXTERNAL PHOTO LINKS ON FORUM: You can still use external photo links in your posts on the new forum. They follow the rules of any link in that they have to have the URL link qualified down to the full image file name (example: .jpg). The links will open in a new browser window, the same as an uploaded image attached to a post. Since an image attachment to any post does not display inline with the post, the results are the same. You can use multiple external links within a post. This link is from photos on a site from Don Clink's 'Deuce@75' albums:

    http://donclink.com/deuce_75_1/images/dscn2950.jpg

Using links from photo sites such as Photobucket can help in "size" issue with uploaded attachment files. For best viewing in web browsers, photos should be around the 800x600 pixel range, and probably not more than 1024x768. Most cameras today store HUGE jpg image files, as the default settings are in the 7, 8, 10, and 12Mb image sizes. The image files that are then attached are very large, and the browser can't display the full image size without using the scroll bars. Use the re-sizing functions of your photo editing software to reduce the image to 800x600, which reduces the file sixe and the image load time in the browser. Don uses Google's free Picassa3 software, which is an excellent photo management product. All of the photo albums of the Deuce, Grand National, and Auburn that are links on the NORG site were built using Picassa's web creation functions. And it's free? (THANKS to Don Clink for the info!)
  9. HOW DO I SHOW MY EMAIL ADDRESS ALONG WITH MY USERNAME? You can LogIn on the Forum, and select PREFERENCES. On this page Members can add optional information such as their City,State, Country; Occupation; Hobbies: list a Homepage; list AOL Instant Messanger Handle; Signature; "Make Email Address viewable to others;" and even change the number of Default Topics shown on a page. Question: Is the 1942 hood the same for the 6 and 8-cylnder? I can't imagine Ford making two hoods but who knows. I have a NOS hood but am missing the piece that attaches to the inside front of the hood to latch the hood closed. Thinking if they are the same I could probably find that piece easier.

Hoods are the same for the V-8 and the six. The upper and lower latches are fairly easy to find.

Thanks. That's what I needed to know. I have the bottom piece.

Jerry, if you are going from the 6 cylinder latch setup to the V-8 you "may" have to drill a couple of mounting holes in the lip of the hood. The V-8 latch sits further back than the "6" latch. The radiator air deflector is also different on the V-8(longer) than the six deflector. The V-8 deflector is reproduced (Drake), but the six is not

Jerry it is very rare that Tom has given out wrong information. But the hood and all the parts for it are the same for both the 6 and 8 cylinder car. The panel hood auxiliary catch and locking mechanism assembly are the same for 6 and 8 cylinder cars. Part number is 21A-8162. The strainer hood front is the same for 6 and 8 cylinder cars. The part number is 21A-16848. The panel hood air deflector is the same for 6 and 8 cylinder cars. The part number is 21A-16613. This part is not being reproduced by Bob Drake or anyone else. All of the above parts were only used on 1942 Ford passenger cars. The air deflector that mounts into the hood is very hard to find. In the 1941-48 Ford book that the V-8 Club had printed and on page 2-6 you will find pictures of the above parts. Tom I hope that we are still friends as I meant no disrespect. You do a tremendous service of answering questions on the V-8 Club Forum and thank you. Fred Killian

I have a 42 Tudor Sedan probably built very late in the production run, like Dec '41. There is no evidence of it ever having the air deflector in the hood. There is evidence of it having a very well done repaint early on, maybe just after the war. Is it possible the late production cars did'nt have the air deflector? Fred - you looked at this car at the national meet in Gettysburg this year, the black '42 sedan.

Hey Fred, we will always remain good friends. I do know that the radiator air deflector for the '46-'48 6 cylinder cars is shorter than the air deflector for the V-8 cars of those years as I have had both style deflectors. I made an assumption that the '42 would be the same as it uses the same hood, etc. I should not have lumped '42 in with '46. I'll move to the back of the classroom and put on the pointed hat!

How late is late? I have a 42 that was probably built late December or early January. No air deflector but the holes for it are there. They are in the bottom edge of the hood just ahead of the radiator. Maybe someone put silencer rubber plugs in them on yours? I know of a 42 wagon that was definitely built for the Navy, again late production and it has the air deflector. The air deflector is unique to the 42 only.

If enough of us jump up and down and ask maybe a parts vendor will reproduce them. BTW my car runs just fine without it which is maybe why so many disappeared.

Based on the serial #, window bugs, etc., we believe our car was built the last week in December, 1941.

There are a pair of rubber plugs on the hood at the location 42wagon mentions, always just assumed they were supposed to be there.

Wayne I do remember looking at your car at Gettysburg in June. I believe that the air deflector was installed on all 1942 Fords. Even the 1942 Ford Fordors that were built for the U.S. Government for the military had this air deflector installed in their hoods. My 1942 Ford Coupe with 56,000 original miles when I first bought it was also missing this deflector but the holes were already in the hood. I put rubber plugs in my hood until I was ready to install the air deflector. My car is a very early car probably built on the first day of production at Long Beach, California. I was lucky that when I had my car on the show field at Hershey in 2001 that I was talking to Ken Brown and Mike O'Connor that I was missing that air deflector and Mike stated that he had a nice used one he would sell me. So I was lucky that I found someone that had one. I have never seen one for sale. I think that if anyone is missing this part now then it was probably removed by a previous owner. I don't see a parts vendor going to the expense of making the tooling for this part as there are so few 1942 Fords left that need this part. The 1942 Ford hood is also a one year only part as the hood was changed for 1946. Tom, I am glad that we are still good friends and you can take that pointed hat off and come back to the front of the class now. I always enjoy reading your posts on the Forum and the Ford Barn. Keep up the good work. The only reason I made my post was that I didn't want to have Jerry drilling holes that he didn't need to. Please everyone on the Forum have a SAFE AND HAPPY THANKSGIVING. Fred Killian
