Thanks so much for your generosity Ken! It is indeed the carb with the small fitting. I have two other cores that have the bigger fitting to compare it to. I took the carb off the car again yesterday to give it another look over and redid that fitting with the yellow Teflon tape and it seemed to make a good tight seal without over lightening it. and sure enough it still leaks. I mean really leaks. Seems if it leaked this bad that I would be able to see where its coming from? Would the warped bowl show to my naked eye? I think that I will just send it out to Dayton Parts Co. for a rebuild for 300 bucks? Merry Christmas to me Ha Ha! Randy

Rand, all you have to do is replace the inner bowl section with another plus all the gaskets to do this, its a little tricky if you've never done one. I can give you another bowl section BUT have to know wich one you have. There are 2 diff ones . Either the inlet threads are 1/8" pipe thread or a bigger hole which is sealed with a gasket and very fine thread (i'll get the pitch tomorrow for you) Just pay for the shipping and the gaskets . ken ct. 1-203-260-5945 cell.

The Holley 885 carbs are very sensitive to warpage. I've found several that were warped so bad that they leaked from several places on the float bowl.

After closer examination, I think that you will find that the fuel line adapter is leaking around the threads and the gas is traveling to the screw before it drips down. A new gasket may fix the problem, but you will probably have to have an insert made to accept the threads of the adapter. The pot metal has probably deteriorated and the threads are not holding the adapter tight.

Obviessily a 49-51 Merc carb. Ive never seen one leak from that bolt hole. You must be leaking gas from the bowl or theres a crack from the fitting hole to the screw hole. There shouldn't be any gas in the outer cover. The bowl is sealed from the outside cover. ken ct.

Another question.....My original type Holly back draft carb has developed a leak. Gas is dripping from near the gas line connection. I removed the carb and re sealed the nipple what the gas line attaches to with form a gasket #3 thread sealer. It says on the bottle that it will hold up to gasoline. With a mirror I looked up and can see the gas dripping from around that big flat head screw which holds the carb together right behind the nipple that the gas line attaches to. Is there a internal leak and this is just an easy way out for the gas? I tried to tighten that big flat head screw while the carb was out too, but it was already tight. Do you think it might be time for a rebuild? Did I just answer my own question? Carb was rebuilt about 5 to 7 years ago. Thanks, Randy
