'39: lights go on and off as I turn steering wheel. I suspect a bent rod in the column. I want to rewire the lights for a switch under the dash. Any comments will be appreciated , especially with regard to including the tail lamps and brake lights in the circuit.

The easiest way to this is to make a new harness that will supply voltage to the dimmer switch as well as the parking and tail lights. The brake lights do not go through the light switch. My copy of the wiring diagram for a 39 Mercury is not very clear, so I cannot give you better instructions. Have you considered checking around for a different rod or trying to straighten your rod?

Thanks. I have a wiring diagram. I thought the alternative wiring might be easier than pulling the rod.

It is probably easier to remove the rod as you would only have to drop the steering column from the dash(2 bolts), remove the switch at the bottom of the column (bail) and remove the switch spider from the bottom of the rod (C-clip). To rewire, you would have to build a harness to route the wires to the dash switch, attach the wires to the dimmer switch (remove front mat, remove floor boards, remove dimmer switch).

I will think about that. I have merely speculated about the rod because I don't have any other explanation.Neither approach will be "fun".

You are probably correct about the rod being bent. That is the most logical explanation of why the light switch operates when you turn the steering wheel.
