My '36 has the copper mesh inside the air cleaner and I'm wondering how to replace it or how to clean it. I don't see how to remove it as the cleaner does not come apart as far as I know. Suggestions on how do do either clean or replace. Thanks.

Back in the day if the mesh was in good condition, we would soak them in cleaning solovent overnight, then let them drip dry and/or gently blow them out

I'm curious to know what yours looks like. Here is a picture of the one on my phaeton. With the wing nut and top removed, the mesh comes out easily. Houston, Tranquility Base here, the Eagle has landed.

rogbell, I have a '35 Cabriolet but believe the '35 and '36 regular air cleaner are the same. The copper mesh is trapped between two bands of small hardware cloth. Each band is "tipped" together at an overlap area with solder. I just invert the air cleaner in some solvent and clean it rather than take it out. If you want to take it out, just "break" the light solder and remove the inner band of hardware cloth. Clean or replace the copper mesh and spot solder the inner band back together. jwitt - I believe your pictured air cleaner is for a later model V8. Probably '37-'38 or later. Thanks for the suggestions. I do have a parts washer so I will try to clean the mesh that way since I can't remove it from the actual air cleaner.

Don't forget to oil the element after you clean it. After oiling, let it drain before putting it back in the car. You can also use fogging oil on the mesh and then you won't have to wait for the excess to drain off. Tom, doesn't carb cleaner damage some paints? I prefer to use a 50/50 solution of water and Simple Green. Swish the element in the solution until it looks clean, blow the excess solution out with compressed air and oil it. Tom

I've got the air cleaner, with mesh inside, soaking in a degreaser that won't remove the paint and it's biodegradable, seems to be working. I have spray oil for K & N filters shouldn't that work? Thanks for all the suggestions.

I have no idea if the K & N oil is thick enough to coat the mesh. Ford recommended that the element be dipped in motor oil and allowed to drain. Tom

The K&N oil is quite tacky, should work fine on a mesh filter. John Houston, Tranquility Base here, the Eagle has landed.
