Topic: Transmission Gear Oil

What are recommendations for proper gear oil in our early Ford V8 transmissions? I have heard that some oils are not appropriate for the syncros. Can the same gear lube also be used in the rear end?

The correct transmission oil is GL- 4. The correct oil for the rear axle is GL- 5.
Do not use GL- 5 in the transmission as the sulphur content of the oil can harm the brass synchronizer rings.

I looked for GL4 today at NAPA and other suppliers, did not find any. May have to order online.

  Tractor Supply

They seem to be just about everywhere now.

They even have the gear oil recommended for Ford Tractors. Yes, those Ford tractors from the 1950's.

You may have to use a GL-3 Transmission oil that is available locally. One is Pennzoil Synchromesh Manual Transmission Fluid. I found it at a local NAPA Store several years ago. If your vehicle has a Borg-Warner Overdrive Transmission you will want to use a GL-1 Mineral Oil which was also available from NAPA at that time.

If your NAPA Store doesn't have these oils in stock, they can order them for you and have them in a day or two.

I checked TSC, I seem to remember them having it in the past, but an employee said they do not have any.

I bought a gallon of GL4 the other day at O'Rielly's. It is 140, seems they would make it in a multigrade, which I would prefer.
