I am considering driving my 1939 Ford Deluxe from Colorado to Florida ! The car is in good condition, but it is 84 years old ! Our plan would be to take the back roads and take our time. Do any of you have a recommendation regarding spare parts to carry on this adventure ?

A spare distributor, coil, and a pair of water pumps. I would also include a piece of 2x4 wood to span the pan to put between the jack in case you need to raise the motor to change a pump. The most valuable tool to take with you is your EFV8CA Roster in the glove compartment. Almost equal in value is a good old fashioned road atlas so you can leave the GPS at home. Alan

In addition to the items already mentioned, I would bring the following: spare fuel pump, complete set of brushes and springs for the generator and starter motor, set of new properly gapped spark plugs, starter fluid, fan belt, spare tire and wheel of correct size and recent manufacture date, cell phone and Garmin GPS unit along with a 12V battery to power it (if your car still has a 6V system). I have taken long trips in old cars and found the cell phone and Garmin to be most useful in getting the car back on the road when you have major troubles. Be sure to carry extra water, anti-freeze and oil!

Great looking car. Be sure to have a good scissors jack, battery powered impact wrench, and other tools for a roadside repair. I have a spare fuel pump, spare generator, spare voltage regulator, coil, condenser, spare light bulbs and water pumps in my car. Over more than 40 years of touring, I have used the voltage regulator, fuel pump, coil and condenser for repairs. I had one flat tire and the scissor jack and impact wrench were great to have. I discovered that a GPS works just fine on 6 volts, but only with negative ground. I insulated the case of a cigarette lighter from the dash and wired it backwards. That said, I always carry a 12 volt battery box for a jump start if necessary. Like if I leave the lights on. I would include that on the list of "spare parts." FWIW, I like to connect the 12 volt battery to the starter side of the solenoid to avoid frying anything. The starter can handle 12 volts for a reasonable amount of time. Safe travels.

All the items listed are a good recommendation. One of the best is the EFV8CA roster. I actually had a reason to use it and it couldn't have worked out better. One small thing that I would also recommend is one or two of the biggest garbage bags you can find. They take up zero room and work well if you need to get under the car or even change a flat. It's a lot cleaner laying or kneeling on plastic then a dirty road. Also, if you belong to AAA they will map out the back roads for you.

My '46 Super Deluxe Coupe is still 6V + ground, and I installed a USB port that I purchased from Classic Chargers. The owner custom made it to fit in the ashtray.
