Does anyone know of a 6 volt PORTABLE jump starter? You know, like the ones with fancy lights and compressors that jump 12 volt systems to start. Using 12 to 6 jump without un-hooking generator/regulator can fry them! (experience from younger days!)

When you use 12 volts to jump a 6 volt car, connect the 12 volts directly to the starter and do NOT use the starter button on the car. This will protect the electrical circuits on the car. I don't know where you could purchase a 6 volt jumper pack. I prefer to push start a standard transmission car. Tom

Tom() Just to confirm...with a positive ground 6 volt car, do you attach the 12 volt negative to the starter and ground the 12 volt negative? If the 12 volt battery is in a running car, will that cause any problems for the running car?

hi what about a 6 volt back up battery ? LIKE A 6 VOLT OPTIMA, no battery acid to spill, use on any angle ! not much more then a good 12volt JUMPER pack or replace the battery that is at fault I never had a problem using a 12 volt jumper, you have to be quick , soon as engine starts disconnect the cables,!!! just do not run the engine with on 12 volts, this is my 2 cents 37RAGTOPMAN

Mich, you would connect the grounding cable to the positive terminal of the battery and the cable going to the starter to the negative terminal of the battery. By connecting the battery directly to the starter and not using the starter button, the starter will continue to run as long as the cables are connected and 12 volts will not go to the rest of the car unless the starter button is pressed. JC, I don't believe that the product is available in the USA. Tom

Tom So the running 12 volt car continues to charge its negative ground 12 volt battery regardless of that 12 volt battery's external connection to the positive ground 6 volt battery? In other words, the 12 volt positive to the 6 volt positive is ok for both cars?

There would be no connection between the 6 volt circuits and the 12 volt circuits as long as the starter button on the 6 volt car is not used. Under no circumstances should you connect a 12 volt battery to a 6 volt battery, you stand a chance of having the 6 volt battery exploding. Using the method below isolates the 12 volts to the starter. If I was using a 12 volt car to jump start a 6 volt car here is how I would connect it: Make sure that the cars are not touching Connect the negative cable from the 12 volt car to the starter connection on the 6 volt car Turn on the ignition on the 6 volt car Connect the positive cable from the 12 volt car to a good ground on the 6 volt car (NOT the battery grounded post) The 6 volt car starter should turn and the residual charge in the 6 volt battery should be enough to start the car Once the 6 volt engine starts, remove the grounding connection so that the starter will stop running Remove the 12 volt cable from the starter connection I would use this only if my car was not able to be push started. Once upon a time there were 8 volt batteries and folks that serviced cars had Pontiac or Buick long skinny batteries that had more ampere-hours to use for jumpers.

Tom So then, under those outlined steps, it would not matter that the 12 volt car is running or not? And once the 6 volt car started, the 6 volt bendix gear would disengage from the flywheel normally even though the 6 volt starter would continue to spin until the 12 volt positive is removed from the 6 volt engine ground?

That is correct if everything works the way it should. I would not have the 12 volt car running as an additional safety measure. I would also turn off all accessories and the ignition switch. Tom
