  Hello ! I was hoping some one could shed some light on this
I own a 36 ford cabriolet and the serial # starts with a D9B9 but I can't find any thing on line they all seem to start with a letter then the number 18

  Do you have any history on the car? foreign? Where are you finding the number and how about a picture of the number?

  The serial number was exactly that starting with 18-1 in 1932. By 1936 the number should be six figures. The official places that it will be found is on the top of the transmission housing and three places along the top of the left frame rail. Only one of the ones on the frame near the front of the engine will be visible without lifting the body.

The number you are giving us does not seem to make sense even if it were a foreign built vehicle.

  I found that number on the firewall on a plate that has this # D9B931565431016 the car I was told is from eastern Canada and is now in the west in BC The plate reads the serial No. then this vehicle is constructed under united states letters patent then a bunch more sequences of numbers then made in the USA by ford Reg.U.S.Pat. Off. I have not seen a number on the frame and it doesn't have the original trans housing.

  Ford in the US did not put serial numbers (VIN's) on plates, they were stamped into the frame and transmission. Does it look like this plate from EBAY? A picture would be nice. Does the title match this number? I would suggest you keep looking on the top of the drivers side frame rail. It might be faint. Be careful not to destroy it while scr*pping paint. If it is not registered/titled I would expect you may end up lifting the body to see the numbers. Of course I am basing this based upon what I think the California DMV would require. Be sure to get the title clean before you invest ANY money in it.

  That sure looks like EBAY (or equivalent). If nothing else it looks too new to be original. What does your title say? Did you find anything on the frame?

  Nor is it a Canadian VIN of the period. If the engine was rebuilt, some jurisdictions require/required a new VIN to be issued. What matters is the number on the title for purposes of registration and licensing. If the number on that plaque matches the paperwork, it matters not what the original number was even though that may well still exist stamped into the top of the left side chassis frame rail. It would commence with 'C18........'

  Yes I believe your right I think when the car was down east they issued a new vin. my paper work is ok because my Province
did the same thing issued it a Provincial vin # .I can't seem to see one on the frame but maybe because its been painted again.
I would still like to find out where the car originated from but I guess it will take some digging....lol

  See if the factory chassis/engine number is stamped on the left side of the frame in the engine area. You may have to scratch some paint off to find it. Be sure you find the "18". My previous owner did not know it was there and only saw the "24278I4". And yes, there has been lots of discussions about the "I" and it is usually recorded as a "1".

Your number may have been assigned by a government entity because they could not find the original number.
