Topic: Best Cleaner For Carburetor Parts

What is the best solvent or cleaning agent to use for cleaning carburetor parts? In the past I used lacquer thinner which worked well but the available new lacquer thinners don't remove all of the deposits and carbon build up.

I use a carb cleaner I purchased at NAPA. I just looked but the label is illegible so I can't give you the name but it is the only one they sell in Canada and it cost about $40 a gallon. After 4 hours in the tank your parts will be very clean. Get some good gloves as it smells nasty will burn the heck out of your hands. Here is a picture of my carb after a dip in the tank. It can be reused many many times before the cleaner must be replaced.

Thank you Matt. That is the way I want my carburetor to look!

A strong solution of Simple Green or other environmental friendly degreaser will do the job for you. I have used a 1:1 ratio of water to cleaner as well as 100% cleaner to clean parts. The 1:1 worked better with Simple Green.

The cleaner that Yokomo99 uses is a lye based cleaner and it will do an excellent job in a short time, but it is dangerous and not nice to the environment. I am not sure that you can even buy it in the U.S.A.

Many years ago, we used a form of carbolic acid to clean carbs. It was nasty and dangerous stuff, but did remove the debris from the carb. The readily available Super Clean also contains sodium hydroxide (lye). We use it for many cleaning needs, but we haven't tried in on carbs, but it cleans where other types do not. Just be careful and use gloves.

I have been using Berryman's for years with excellent results. Buy the gallon can and it comes with an internal basket for small parts.

I've used it over the years. I have the container with the basket in it. I put the carb in it and move it up and down a few times during a 15-20 minute period. Then when I take it out and run real hot water all over it . That cleaner then emulsifies and washes off, and your carb will look like new! Then I blow compressed air all over it and through all the ports .
