A little background information I'm about to buy a 1939 Mercury that used to belong to my granddad he gave it away in 2009 to a man he bought cow feed from when I was 7 and I messaged the man who still has it he said he would sell it back to me for 400 but there is no steering wheel in it. is there any other type of steering wheel I can put on it temporarily to roll it around and steer it ? I have one for a 56 f100 and a 59 ford fairlane also one for a model A JOHNDEERE only reason I mention the JOHNDEERE is I saw one with a car steering wheel

I don't know if it fits, but the 1951 Mercury steering wheel looks a lot like the '39.I have both a '39 and a '5 1 and images of others in the early'50s might be similar. If painted the correct color and you "fake" a horn button you would look pretty good.

Thanks do you know what is different in a 51 mercury and ford steering wheel? Is it just the horn ?

I do not know the difference. Looking at what I have, I am impressed with the similarity of the contours etc. but that does not address the practical issue of whether it fits and does not address the horn. If you need images of the '39 Mercury, let me know.

I do not know if any of the steering wheels that you have will fit. The shaft that the wheel fits onto has a key slot and is threaded 5/8"-18. So if the wheel that you have has provisions for a key and has an opening for the 5/8" shaft. it will work to turn the wheels of the car.

Looking through the Ford parts catalogs that I have, the 56 F100 wheel may work.

I know that the 51 Mercury steering wheel will fit the 40 Mercury, but the steering wheel lock will not work with the 51 Steering wheel. I had one on my 40 Merc convertible when I was in high school. It came from a totaled out new Merc convertible.

Post some photos of the car, we all would like to see your new car.

I havent got the car yet I want to see if a steering wheel I have will work so I can steer it onto the trailer. Ive been working and need my dad to help me load it on the trailer but here are the pictures I do have. It isnt in the best of shape but its 80 and how many people get the chance to buy a vehicle of their grandpas. It was here when I was little and it left not long after he died i always thought the old car was cool and am ready for it to come back home!

Thanks for the photos. It looks like most of the car is there and could be restored. It will take a lot of work and time to do it. Make sure that you are up to the task and can learn the skills needed to restore it. Join a Regional Group of the Early Ford V-8 Club for moral support and help with getting the car back on the road.

Hi 39 Merc, I have a 41 Merc steering wheel , while not in great shape, is very usable . If you happen to get a real good steering wheel, you can keep it nice while doing all the dirty work with this one. It is yours if you want it. I'm in N Carolina. Let me know. Good luck with the rebuild and ask advice in this column as needed. 42oink

Hi 39 Merc, Sorry for the delay, but I've been having Thanksgiving with the relatives. Glad you can use the wheel and if you can give me an idea where to send it I'll be happy to get it to you. Phone number is fine or ? 42oink

  39 Merc
if the shaft has a key way, a Model a would get would work to get around the yard,
just make sure you use a key way,
I am almost certain of this,
give it a try,
does that 39 Merc have a engine ?
my 2 cents 37Ragtopman

Hi 39mercury, I am back home and got the wheel out of the attic. It does have the keyway as a previous guy mentioned. If you can, give me an email address or some way to get an address to ship it. I am also leery of scammers, so whatever you want to do, let me know. I saved this and a few other parts, like the extension parts that Ford used on the 41's to give em 4" longer wheelbase, from a street rodder who was throwing them out. Have a Merry Christmas and New Year and look forward to seeing some progress on your car. Don't get discouraged! Most of us have been this route and actually got em going. Look forward to hearing from you. 42oink
