Hi - I have a stock '50 Merc with the following issue. When I turn on my parking or headlights, my tail-lights go dark - both blinkers and brake lights. When lights are off, they both work fine. My wiring diagram is buried in the garage somewhere so I am reaching out the forum for any tips. Both bulbs (both elements) in the rear assemblies tested and work fine. The rear license plate light does illuminate when parking/driving lights are on. Thanks! DJ

You have me stumped. Are you talking about tail lights or stop lights? The wire that feeds the tail lights also feeds the license light. The stop lights and turn signals go through the turn signal switch. Check the voltage at any of the rear lights(tail light, or license light) with the lights on, you should see at least 5.8 volts with a fully charged battery or with the engine running. If you don't see this voltage check all of the connections back to the light switch. Short out the stop light switch and do the same check. If the voltage at the lights is withing specifications, take a jumper wire and connect it between a body bolt and the tail light housing. Hi Tom, I will perform these tests this evening. To answer your question, both the stop and tail lights go out with the lights on. The one exception is that license plate light. Otherwise, stop and directional signals work fine. -DJ

Well, it is amazing what a bad ground does to you! All fixed. While I was at it, I replaced the front turn signals with LEDs lights. Much better. As I suspected, I couldn't replace the rear ones with LEDs as the blinker became too dim. I guess there is not enough draw for the relay with rear LEDs. In any case, thank you. I like your car. Four door cars are a lot of fun as you get older. People can actually get in the back seat. I was looking for one when I bought my Lincoln, but when the low mileage unrestored Lincoln Capri Coupe showed up in the classified section of this website, I couldn't pass it up. I place a star washer (internal tooth for looks) on one of the bolts that holds the tail light housing in place, in order to have a good ground on the lights. Google "6 volt electronic flasher for LED lights work for most LED applications. You can try this source. If you do, let me know the results as I may use one on my Lincoln. Hi DJ, That is a beautiful car! I have a '49 coupe and I love that car, it just drives and runs so good!! TomO is right tho, the 4 doors are very user friendly. I have a '41 Caddy that is 4 doors and is great for riders. Continue to upgrade and enjoy your great ride. I'm also going to try the LED's. Don
