Is an Optima based Ford script battery considered correct for Concourse judging? I bought one from Restoration Battery.

Be certain it has the correct vent caps and you have painted the area surrounding the Ford script and you'll be fine.

Thanks. Is there a picture available to use as a guide?

The area surrounding the Ford script was gold on the "standard" issued battery.

I have painted the oval area shown in the photo. Since the battery case is polypropylene, which is notoriously difficult to paint, I used an adhesion promoter, then a two part primer. These are the same products used on TPO (thermoplastic olefin) bumpers. TPO is a pp/thermoplastic rubber compound and is also difficult to get paint to bond.
Thanks for all your help.

Hmmm.... I have never had an issue with adhesion. I typically rough the surface up with 400 grit and wipe it with lacquer thinner. I then apply the gold, no primer. Even after numerous years, they have all held up quite well.

Hi Mike, On the caps, I do not know the correct answer so.... Mine have in a vertical set "Plug Most Be Tight". Circumference says, "Do Not Remove While Charging". There is the small U.S.A. as well. I think that is correct because there was no Ford script on the 40 battery caps. I Think! Thanks Ken

kubes40    -- 06-13-2015 @ 8:30 PM
Hey Ken, Those are the correct caps for 1940.

std1940    -- 06-14-2015 @ 6:05 AM
Mike what paint brand and color gold are you using?
Tom.

kubes40    -- 06-14-2015 @ 7:17 AM
  std1940,
Believe it or not, I use Testers paint, Gold. It holds up very well and is quite easy to apply. I clean the area with lacquer thinner, no primer necessary.

The "Do Not Remove" caps are also correct for 1938.
On the application of the Testors gold, the oval is a raised flat area, lending itself very well to the use of a roller, without masking at all. I used a 3" soft rubber roller found at the same hobby shop i bought the Testors gold. That battery case is actually sitting outdoors in the weather now, gold paint still good, and had not been originally roughed up as Mike had done. I wish my house paint held up as good!

Alan brings forth a good point about vent caps. The place that sells these repop batteries has consistently installed the Ford script caps on them even though I have each and every time told them specifically to install the correct caps.
They always "make good" after a not so very nice "exchange" with the owners wife.
Why this continues, I do not know...

ford38v8    -- 06-14-2015 @ 5:46 PM
HA! I had the same experience, they insisted the script caps were correct! No charge to send the right ones, though.

This issue also brings up another point about where and who to believe on what is correct, the vendors of parts or the V8ers who've actually done the research?

Alan

kubes40    -- 06-15-2015 @ 7:29 AM
Alan, your question as to whom should be "trusted" as to what is correct, vendor vs. proper research, is worthy of its own thread.
You and I have too often experienced owners, not satisfied with their judged results, argue, "I got that from so and so and his catalog said it is correct".
I tend to respond that one must remember first and foremost the vendors are just that, salesman. Their #1 priority is profit.
One glaring and nearly consistent issue on 1939 - 1940 Fords are script radiator hoses. NOT correct. End of story. Period.
Still, Drake and others continue to hawk them as "correct".
As you know, the list goes on and on...

Can you still purchase Ford Script Optima batteries?

If so, from where?

Thank you.
