Good Morning Gene--- Contact Coker Tire - (800) 949-8600, or "COKERTIRE.com. They have a nice online catalog for you to check out too. I just replaced the tires on my 40 Sedan with Firestone 6.50x16 WWW. Look great. They should look good on your coupe too. Coker has 6.00x16 Blackwalls too. Give 'em a holler. Tom

I went with Diamond Back radial 650-16 with the correct bias tire look and could not be more happier!

Tom, Have you noticed any front fender rubbing with the next step up size of 650 - 16 ? I spoke with Corky Coker's daughter, Casey at a recent car event. She warned that the 650 might rub. I'd rather have the 650 since it offers more rubber on the road. Gene Gene Talley

Gene, I have a 1940 Fordor with Firestone 6.50 - 16 from Coker. The fronts rub very slightly if turning a 90 degree corner a bit too fast. It's really not an issue; can't see evidence on the tires. I'd go for the 6.50s. Barney

Good morning, Gene and Barney--- Thanks to both of you for your emails. The answer is "Yes". I do hear a LITTLE rubbing on the front tires, just like Barney mentioned. OK, Gene and I agree - more rubber on the road with the 6.50s. I see no damage to the front tires either. Just take it easy on the turns. My car is in semi-retirement and only gets driven short distances around the neighborhood. I'll just be a little bit more cautious about making real sharp turns, so we can all keep safe. Depending upon how you want to use your 1940 Ford Coupe, you have additional tire options. If you want your car to be a reliable driver that you can drive cross country with trouble-free tires, the best solution might be to use 1942-1951 Mercury 15" diameter wheels. These wheels have the same 5 1/2" diameter bolt circle pattern as your original 16" wheels. You will then be able to use modern 15" tubeless radial ply tires. These tires are easier to find and much more affordable than "classic car tires". No problem of rubbing at all. My car has stock suspension. The 6:50x 16 is listed as an option in 1940.

Gene, 6:50 x 16" was an authorized option from Ford in 1940. I have installed them on each and every one of my restorations. In my opinion they appear much nicer than the (too small) 6:00's. Fender rubbing? Never. If someone has an issue with rubbing, there's something askew within the geometry of their car. My initial thought would be a worn-out spring.
