Topic: 1940 Ford Pickup

Looking for a mechanic in Olympia, Washington that can help trouble shoot and start, run my 1940 Ford Pickup with original flathead V8. I inherited it from my Father and don't ever remember it running. He bought it and had it shipped here at least 30 years ago. The fuel tank was contaminated with bad fuel so I bypassed the pump and tank and jerry rigged an electric pump. I eventually got it started with a jumper from the hot side of the battery to the coil. This assisted the coil and it started up. It started running rough after it was significantly warmed up. I discovered the old coils didn't do well with heat. I had the coil rebuilt by the guy in Florida but it didn't improve the performance. It eventually wouldn't start. I bought a new coil and it still won't start. It would be nice to have someone more mechanically inclined to trouble shoot it. I would dearly pay for the time to have this memory of my father running.

Update. I'm thinking it might be a fuel problem. I have a Stromberg 1 1/32 P20671 Carburetor....which I believe they say is a Stromberg 48.......any suggestions on a rebuild kit?

Update. I added a couple pictures of the Stromberg Carb.

I'm thinking now that I probably should just do a complete tuneup with all new points, plugs, condenser etc. My Distributor is dual points and my understanding it's quite involved to set them up. I've seen complete rebuilt distributors on e-bay that have been bench set.....anybody have comments on these.

Craig

For carb parts or repair if your truck does have a Stromberg Uncle Max is your man.

Next question, are you sure its a Stromberg and not a Holley? If its a Holley then Daytona Carburetor for a carb kit.

Another option if its a Holley is to send it to
Charlie Schwendler

He rebuilt the Holley 94 on the 8ba I have in my '39 p/u and it runs like new.
Good luck getting your truck running.

If you live in Olympia , Washington and are a V-8 Club member , use your roster and look for club members near you and call them. They may be able to help or give you names of others to help. There are many members in Washington. In fact you can access some of the Washington Clubs in the left hand menu of this site. Go to Regional Club Directory and then scroll down to Washington. Open that page and you will see four regional groups with phone numbers of the presidents. I'm sure one of those groups is near Olympia. BTW that is one nice '40 pickup.

I would be interested in that truck if you ever want to sell it. Are you interested in a 61 Chevy Bubbletop with a 409, dual quad, four speed?

Btw, anything over 2.5 psi fuel pressure will force fuel past the needle and seat in the carb and give you a very rich idle. Also will push excess fuel past the rings and dilute your oil. If you are going to use an electric pump you need a pressure regulator and gauge.

I would suggest you get the proper Carb. for your vehicle rebuild and not the Stromberg. Originally the vehicle had a Holley or Ford 94 Model 91-99 Charlie Schwindler in NY is the rebuild person for this Carb and may be able to supply a proper core as well as rebuild, see the club rooster.

Older post I know and I'm sure you've got everything taken care of, but I just wanted to say that pickup is beautiful!
