Topic: Wrong carb

DMMuir    -- 10-23-2021 @ 12:21 PM
  I think I just discovered my car has the wrong carb on it. It has a ford script “92”. That is stock on a 40 v8-60 if I am correct.

My car being an 85 hp it should have a 94??

  It could be, depending on the year of your car. If your car is a 38 or earlier, it would be a Stromberg.

  It is a 1940 deluxe

  The Carb appears as a 94 which is the style but it is the incorrect model which should be 91-99 for the 1940 85HP car. The correct model should be marked 91-99 and the top does not have the large round vent tube in the center of the venturi, the vent should be an oval hole in the casting. The model 92 is for the 60HP and installed on a 85HP engine should restrict performance due to many difference in the Carb.

  Thanks all

Next question, anyone looking for a 92 carb?

And best place to get the correct 91-99 carb?

  Try Charley Schwendler in NY. He may have a good rebuilt available. cas5845@yahoo.com

The line from the fuel pump to the carburetor looks like it may be copper. Check it with a magnet. If it is copper, you should replace it with a steel line. Third Gen shows that they have the line and the drawing shows it bent for installation.

  I have a correct Holley 94 Model 91-99 carburetor for a 1940 Ford that I would be willing to swap for your Holley 92 carburetor. If you are interested, please send me a private message.

  DMMuir,
You'll quickly realize that the model 92 are much more valuable than the 91-99. I'm not 100% certain why that is but I have sold a number of them and have always been amazed at how much they realize $$$. 91-99 on the other hand... I've sold in the box, Ford remanufactured and have been happy to realize $75.

  The 92 much like the 81 for the "60" cars, have always been more money. The Model A guys grab them up to use on the Model A downdraft manifolds. In the early 70's I paid a premium for an 81 to put on my '29 roadster pickup with a B engine.

  @kubes40 Is this Because of rarity?

I was told this carb would decrease power on my car, being a 60hp carb. I’m not too concerned for that reason, but being my car is original everywhere else, I want it authentic!

  @TomO
Thanks for the tip. What’s the issue with a copper line here?

  Copper work hardens and then cracks from the engine vibrations. A leak in a fuel line is always a fire hazard.

Third Gen parts shows a pre-bent line in their online store. It would be cheap insurance to replace yours if it is copper.

  @TomO
Thanks, I’ll be ordering one to put on with the new carb in the spring (winter sucks up north)

  Yep, rarity. The old "supply and demand" rule of economics

  Carcrazy... looks like a nice core. I've sold a LOT in the same condition. They typically bring $15 to $25 each. The market has really crashed on these.

  Car crazy and kube, the pictured carb is technically not correct for any Ford Passenger car, in that the air horn is a later commercial model, possibly post war, while the carb body itself is the correct model 91-99 for 1939-1940 Ford cars. You can see the colors don’t match, the vent is not correct, and the air horn is specific to commercial vehicles. That said, it should work just fine, and may be bargain priced as well.

  Alan, I never made a claim that was a correct carburetor. I did state that in my opinion it was a core.
In an earlier post, I'd attached two images of one of the correct variations of a '40 carb.

  Mike, and everyone, my apologies regarding the air horn being specific for commercial applications. I had not identified that carb's air cleaner lip correctly. I should have compared one to the other before making that identification. Either way, that carb with mismatched upper/lower should have no operational difficulties.
