Topic: 36 ford solenoid installation

I just removed the starter foot operated starter switch and installed a solenoid on the firewall. All went well until I discovered the dash mounted starter button has one terminal and meant to send a ground to the solenoid. Well the 'S' terminal on the solenoid is meant for the switch but it is ground looking for battery. I tested it with battery and it worked. So you see my problem is with the starter button being a ground. What am I doing wrong? See attachment.

your problem is that you installed "a solenoid". You need a solenoid meant for an early Ford, the one you have is possibly for a GM or Chrysler.

You can use that solenoid by installing a short jumper from the battery terminal of the starter to the I terminal of the solenoid and then connect the S terminal to the starter button. The Ford 3 terminal soenoid does thi with internal wiring. 14 gauge wire will work.

I decided to fix my problem by installing a (2) terminal dash mounted start button so I could supply battery to the 's' terminal on the (4) terminal 12v solenoid. The start button doesn't look exactly like the original but most folks wouldn't know it. Maybe this will help anyone else who wants to convert the floor switch to the dash which also, is a lot safer. Thanks for your interest.
