A friend has a 46 with a replacement clutch that is so difficult to engage from a stopped position it is almost impossible to drive. When the original replacement was done 3 years ago, the flywheel was dressed at a flywheel machine shop known for quality work. The three fingers on the new pressure plate appear to engage the throwout bearing at the same time. We used a new clutch disc. All the motor/tranny mounts are snug on new parts and the rear spring U bolts are tight. Once rolling the changing of gears is smooth. We are looking for a replacement clutch and pressure plate. Any recommendations for a supplier of a quality clutch assembly would be appreciated.

Another endorsement here for Fort Wayne Clutch. Had same issue as you with an early '47 - almost undriveable after replacing the clutch disk and pressure plate from another source. Although changing gears at speed was acceptable, starting from a dead stop would shake the fillings out of your teeth and reverse was absolutely impossible. Advice from this forum led me to Fort Wayne Clutch and, with advice from TomO on proper, most effective installation technique and process, the clutch was (and continues to be after 4,000 miles) buttery smooth throughout all gears and particularly on initial launch and reverse. Have to say I was stunned by how smooth their product was and is. Service and advice was absolutely excellent from Fort Wayne as well - absolutely do not believe you can go wrong with them. Search the forum for 'clutch', 'clutch installation', etc., and 'TomO' and you'll find the process for installation that will ensure your success.

Thanks for responding. It is frustrating to do a job for someone and have the results turn brown. No matter how good our intentions, we are all a victum of the quality or lack thereof of the parts we have to use. Again thanks.

Excellent information: My '48 Coupe, whilst pulling away, in low gear, wants to shake the front end right off the car. The clutch and throw-out bearing are true Ford new old stock parts from a Ford dealer,s attic. Surfaces were refinished at a notable racing engine machine shop prior to reassembly. Low gear as I said would like to shake the front of the car right off. Pulling away in second gear, smooth as silk; reverse: smooth as the proverbial bottom. Even pulling away in third on level ground accomplished without trouble. Thanks guys. Hello Fort Wayne.........................
