I have posted on other forums with no real results. I want to put a sweet 53 Mercury that is in a F6, so it has truck pan two piece bell housing in a 46 car. I haven't touched a 59AB since 1960. Plan to use the 46 clutch, play the cooling hose games. The 46 & Merc has the same fan set up. Just want to know if this is more or less plug and play? I'm too old to remember but I put a 8BA in a 1936 remembering only slight fan problem. This is temporary until I rebuilt the 59A. Far as I know manifolds, same dimensions, same but I'm stuck on 59A & late two piece bell housings? It should slide right in yes-no with 46 clutch? This is only about downtime cause the 46 is my only wheels. sam

You might run into a different bolt pattern if you try to use the Ford Clutch. If the Merc has the original flywheel the bolt spacing will be six evenly spaced 3/8" bolts holding the pressure plate. The flywheels are not interchangable. If you get a good, true Mercury engine in the car you won't want to take it out.

I would imagine the mercury most likely has a 11" clutch being in a F6 so why can't I just use the 46 clutch disk? pressure plate doesn't care ? I'm just guessing cause I haven't taken either engine out yet. I only want to wrench them in the morning and drive out in the afternoon.sam

Yes, IF, IF, the clutch in the Merc engine is 11", your disc should work. Just because the engine is in an F6 doesn't mean it has an 11" clutch. Maybe the disc in the Merc engine will fit your transmission. After so many years of changing stuff around, you will have to look at the parts to determine what is in/on the engine(s). The truck bell housing will bolt to your stock '46 transmission.

Here is a link to a site that gives you some information on the flywheel and clutch usage and the oil pan and bell housing differences. http://www.btc-bci.com/~billben/flathead.htm Some of the bell housings will work with the earlier transmission and some of the oil pan will work with the earlier chassis. I would have to assume that the '53 8CM engine being in a F-5 truck would have truck and/or '49-50 Merc water pumps with the '49-50 Merc frame mount spacers. See the attached pix of an 8BA engine in a '37 Ford truck. The bell housing/flywheel, clutch assembly that was used to put the 8CM into the F-5 will most likely not fit the '46, but then again it might. The engine will have to be pulled to establish just what was used, and what will be required to complete the re-assembly into the '46. Bill 36 5 win delx cpe
