Mike, I'm in the process of changing a 39 convertible sedan INTO a 40 Deluxe. I'm a 40 guy always have been (my first was at 13 in 58) the one thing I can't find any info on is installing 40 convertible vent windows in the 39 doors and not ever having a 40 convertible (lots of coupes & sedans) I have been told the convertible door handle is different than the sedan - please enlighten me as to what the difference is. I have purchased new 40 convertible door latch components from Drake, yes I understand I will need to modify my existing 39 front windows to work with the 40 vents, plan on using 40 convertible lifting parts not 39, do you see any issues with this setup? Thanks Ted

Ted, I am not familiar with the '39 convertible sedan doors. I do know it doesn't require a ton of modification to change '39 closed car doors in to '40 doors. In fact, the times I have done this, the holes required for the '40 wing windows were already in place in the '39 doors.

The '40 handle is secured within the door by a screw accessed at the door jamb. I can photograph this if you like.
The '40 convertible handle has reverse threads on the end of the shaft. A (reverse thread) special chrome plated nut and pan head screw (threaded in to end of shaft) hold the shaft in position within a bezel.
Does your '39 have a similar setup?

Mike, Appreciate the feedback, I'm waiting to get from Drake new 40 convertible door latches, once they get here I'm planning on taking my 39 doors apart. I will get back to you as to what the 39 looks like. Just for the record I have NO intentions in passing my car off as one of the "so called" (pick a number) 6 that were built as "real" 1940's, I'm doing it because I like the look of the 40 Deluxe and want a 4 door convertible - simple as that. The title reads 1939, which is what it is! I do not believe there ever was ANY built and titled as 1940's, it is just one of those things that keep getting told without ANY backup proof from Ford.

Ted, Like you, I have found those stories in regard to authentic 1940 convertible sedans as laughable as the guys are that believe them.

I have seen a couple of so called '40 convertibles with "factory" rumble seats. It takes little time to figure out they are '39s with '40 sheet metal attached

Mike, There is one of the 40 Deluxe front & dash with 39 rear with rumble seat cars in our area of Southern CA.,- as memory serves me it has 40 tail lights - looks to be something done quite some time ago (can't remember if the doors have vent windows or not) it makes you stop and think. I got my care package from Drake yesterday, the 40 convertible door latches were in the box, will open up my 39 doors next week the first chance I get and will get back to you as to what I find. ALSO: I ordered a 1939-1940 "Body Parts List" book from Drake - it shows everything BUT front end parts = hood & front fenders!! Would you know of any publication (don't care who from) that would give me the details on 39 & 40 front end parts? Ted

The fenders and hood are listed in the Chassis Parts Catalog. the P/N's start at 81A-16005. The best drawings are in the May 1, 1940 printing. The 1941 reprint also has some drawings that can be used.
