I looked at my, in need of restoration, 1936 metal rod shade today. I see the fabric is swedged into the tubed rod. The snapping upper rod is made of wood with existing eye hooks at each end. The upper snap is in place, all shade material is brittle and the inner tube spring is operating. I don't see, except for the eye hooks, a reason for the string that will run up each side of the fabric. I think new fabric could be glued to the spring loaded rod.

To my knowledge, the 35 and 36 Coupe rear window shades did not have the strings on the ends. They do pull closed from the bottom and not pull done from the top.

To continue the window shade subject: Why did Henry design in a shade? Looking at 3w2's pic it has a string. .... shade pulling down. All the 36's pics so far pull up with no string. My 36 have eyelets in the wood cross member and shows no upper string connection. Maybe Henry's supply of wood cross member w/eyelets hadn't run out.
