If your '39 Merc has one piece driveshaft / pinion, the install will require a pinion gear that uses a coupling sleeve. I'll also guess that the rear gear is a 3:54 to 1 a pretty tall gear for an OD with a stock flathead, unless you live in flat country.

Haven't done one myself, but I understand that the rear floorboard needs a bump-up, and even then you may need to take speed bumps carefully. Happy cruising!

I have a 39 Mercury and purchased a Mitch*ll overdrive for it some time ago but have yet to install it. Any advice on installation or driving experience after installation would be welcome. Thanks, Steve Middleton Cicero Indiana.
