Tom Here are two photo's, although not as clear as I would like them and both of Convertibles and one much more distinct than the other.....BUT one - BOTH appear gold finish, the other is clearly one of each. Also, I was told that the wire loom cover on the firewall was "supposed" to be Black!! Clearly, an assembly line photo showing the cover as body color? Another difference in our car is the glovebox lid, note NO chrome surround around the entire lock/finger pull section....Ours is not broken nor ever a sign of it having such? I have lots of smaller, not so noticeable differences & question I have seen for 39 Mercury's that I would love to get your opinion/ideas about.

I don't presume to be an expert on the 1939 Mercury, as what I know is derived mostly from Ford literature. I have seen a few original 1939 Mercurys, but did not examine them and take notes. I sold all of my 1939 literature to a Ford guy back in the 1980s and donated all of my 1940 stuff to the Foundation Museum. so most of my opinions are based on my memory and other literature that I have collected since. The plastic coating used on the handles was semi-transparent. This gave the handles a metallic look. Along with the tendency of the plastic to yellow with age, this could provide the gold look you are seeing. I have seen both body color and black wiring loom covers on original 1940 Mercurys. So I don't believe that all of them were black in 1939 or 1940. The 1939 Mercury probably had a lot more changes than the 1940 Mercury and I know that there are 1940 changes that I do not know about. The glove box lock could have been one of the changes.

Thank you Tom, you have been the only one (pretty much) that seems to have a good knowledge of Mercury's, sorry IF I presumed you an "expert", I am trying to learn as much AS I can from the most knowledgeable people I can find and I did not mean to cause any discontent. Thank you once again for what you have shared. I greatly appreciate it!!!

You did not cause any discontent. I am always willing to give my opinion on Mercury cars and other subject that I know something about.
