Topic: serial/vin #

bigal    -- 01-25-2022 @ 6:39 AM
I recently bought what I thought was a 1948 Ford F3. Found a serial#/VIN on passenger side engine fire wall. I think it means that I have a 1949 Ford, is my assumption correct? Any help would be appreciated.
This is what I have------ 98RY 230802 NR
Thanks
Al Cox

I have the 48-52 chassis parts book for the trucks. Apparently the truck rating plate (ID plate) had some changes made to it in 1951 and some of the coding changed from the early trucks. So I am surmising the following; The NR is the Norfolk assembly plant and the number 230802 is the unit number off the assembly line. The 8 means it was a V-8. As for the 9 I suspect that is the model year. If that is the case and your ownership certificate says it is a 1948 but the serial # indicates a '49 then this could be a DMV issue. Back in the early days many DMVs listed the new vehicles in the year they were sold. Your truck is probably a '49 model that was sold in late '48. New ownership certificates now show the year of the vehicle and also the year model. Your ID number should also be stamped on top of the right frame rail near the radiator.

Thanks for info, guess I’m not wrong after all. Will get title corrected to correct year. Thanks again

Al make sure the frame # matches the data plate. Also if it were me, I would try to find an early parts book/chassis book that has the early data plate information before going to DMV. They may ask you for a copy of the early data plate coding before making the year change.

Thank you I never thought about that but is nice to know it really is a 1949 not 48.
