Bud 32B    -- 12-09-2009 @ 3:25 PM
Since I'm new to Ford cars, need a little info on the VIN of my Tudor. Can the number be used to determine build date and location of build. Does the VIN start with a letter or number? Thanks for any replys

  from www.vanpelsales.com aka FordBarn
note:
B models started with *AB serial number * or *B serial number*
note the stars, see the web site for further info
the numbers are located on the transmission for V 8's or on the casting between engine and tranny on the 4's. Note, they are not on the block. Also located in 1 to 3 places on the left frame rail.

Bud, the engine and transmission assemblies all came from the Rouge plant. At that time they were assembled the VIN number that was stamped on the transmission case just above the inspection cover. When that assembly was dropped into a frame the same number on the transmission was stamped onto the frame. There is no way to determine where specific cars were assembled by the VIN number. You can determine the month when the engine and transmission were assembled, but that does not tell you when it was put into a car.It will give you a rough idea along with other items that are specific to early cars, mid year cars, or late cars.
Since you are new to Ford cars and specifically the 32 I would recommend that you purchase the 1932 Ford book put out by the Early Ford V-8 Club. This book comes in two volumes and will tell you everything you will want to know about the 32 Ford. You can purchase the book on-line on the front page of this site.
If you are not a member of the Early Ford V-8 Club I would also recommend that you join. For $35 you will get six issues a year of the V-8 Times and it will give you a lot of information on V-8 Fords.

I was looking at the info on your post, I just bought a 48 ford with a V8 flathead. The VIN starts with 899A. Unless I am reading this info incorrectly it appears this VIN is for 48 Merc V8's. If you could please clarify this for me. This is my first car this old and am still trying to figure out how they identified them.
thanks

Hi Joe, The 899A prefix on your 48 Ford serial number is correct.Since you are new to the hobby I will make the following suggestions; 1st, you should purchase the V-8 Club's 41-48 Ford book. It will give you a lot of information on your car such as paint colors, upholstery colors, engine specs, etc. A great book for the person new to the hobby and 41-48 Fords. 2nd, I would recommend that you join the Early Ford V-8 Club.If you are already a member then you know the benefits. If not a member, then by joining you will get a club roster and 6 issues a year of the V-8 Times magazine. The club magazine will be a great help to the person who is new to flathead cars. The roster will also help you find other Ford owners who may live in your own backyard.
On the front page of this site you can order the book and also join the club. Lastly we hope you continue to visit this site and ask questions. We will try to supply answers.
