Topic: A growling question for Gearheads

1941 Ford low gear growls ferociously should I reduce power in this gear. Not downshifting just running in the gear for, say a couple of hundred feet, then slowing to a stop. Is this normal? 2nd and 3rd seem normal neutral reveals a faint gear vibration. I would appreciate what thoughts you may have on these matters

Are you sure your transmission has enough oil in it? Once the oil level gets low, the gears will make more noise.

Do check oil level, it should be all the way up to the bottom of the fill plug. Low gear is not synchronized so you can not down shift to it when coming to a stop. It is possible there is damage to the 1st-Rev gear or the cluster gear. The transmission could need new bearings?

  HI GROWLING NOISE
I would drain the oil in the transmision, into a clean container,
and see what it looks like, us a Magnet to see if you pickup any metal
do this before you have major problems,
if the oil is ok, replace it with NEW oil to correct level
hope this helps 37Ragtopman, Maine
