Topic: 32 v/8 engine bolts

What finish are the bolts and are there lock washers on the engine? Is there away to remove the bright finish on the modern fasteners? Are the heads of the bolts plain? Merry Christmas to all.

That depends on where on the engine you are referring to. For example, the original finish S-2 (black oxide) was used on the bolts and nuts of the transmission to engine block and elsewhere and S-7 (cadmium plated) fasteners were used elsewhere. As well, there were some plain fasteners (S)

With the notable exception of some original bolts having an M forged on their heads, the bolts had unmarked heads. The heads of original bolts were noticeably thicker than they are today for the same thread size.

Hardware store fasteners are usually zinc plated as cadmium plating sources are disappearing. A brief immersion in metal prep will usually tone down the appearance of zinc-plated fasteners.

Thirdgenauto.com sells the correct size and finish fasteners for the entire engine.

The Club's 1932 book details the original size and finish for just about every fastener on a '32 Ford, including the engine compartments of both fours and V8s.

Merry Christmas

Thanks for the tip of 3rdgen. Were washers used especially on the aluminum oil pan? What about lock washers? Thanks

Part number 351355-S7 flat washers (5/16 [3/64 x 5/8]) only with aluminum oil pan. Split lock washers (5/16 [1/16 x 19/32]) only for late steel oil pan.
